Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning announced his impending retirement as manager of the Red Devils, bringing down the curtain on an illustrious 27-year spell in charge at Old Trafford. The news was confirmed on the club’s official website as well as on their Twitter account.
United have of course recently wrapped up their 20th Premier League title and rumours have been bubbling under the surface in recent times surrounding former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho’s whereabouts next season.
The club didn’t comment on the intense speculation regarding his retirement yesterday evening but this morning Sir Alex arrived at the club’s training ground, Carrington while the news was broken to the media.
It was only last week that there was no speculation surrounding Sir Alex stepping down from the managerial post and he even noted in Sunday’s Manchester United programme against Chelsea that he had no intention of retiring just yet.
In massive news for the world football community at large, all eyes will now be focused upon who succeeds such a bastion of the game.
