Manchester United are believe to be in strong contention to sign Thomas Vermaelen from rivals Arsenal this summer, Daily Star reports.
The centre-back lost his place in the first team after suffering a string of injuries and saw his defensive role replaced by the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker,
With only one year left on his current contract, the Gunners may decide to sell him for profit as soon as possible or risk him leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Manchester United, Fiorentina, and Juventus are just some of the many clubs interested in bringing over the 28-year-old, who was Arsene Wenger’s choice for team captain.
Many assume that the Red Devils are currently in pole position to acquire his services and it looks as though the French manager will also be allowing the player to leave to a direct title contender.
His agent, Alex Kroes, remained calm over the potential move, but insists that negotiations for Vermaelen will continue when he returns from international duty at the World Cup.
“Several Italian clubs have shown an interest,” Kroes told La Repubblica.
We will wait for the World Cup before we discuss anything regarding his future.”
