Manchester United are preparing to launch a formal £40million bid in order to lure Arjen Robben to join up with Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, Express reports.
The Bayern Munich attacker is currently one of the best performers at the World Cup, scoring three goals in two games, with a double coming against the current champions Spain.
Van Gaal, who is already managing Robben with the Dutch national team, believes United will be a lot more dangerous should they be able to land him.
However, the Dutchman recently signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2017, and also stated last month that a move to join the Red Devils is out of the question.
Last month Robben said: “Manchester United? That’s not an option. I am staying at Bayern Munich. Period.
“And I cannot imagine that Bayern would want to sell me.
“I have only just renewed my contract and we are happy with each other. It would have been a different story had I been unhappy.
“I would have been open to a move then, because I had a great time under Van Gaal at Bayern. He has been very important for my career.
“However, the fact is that I am very happy at my current club.”
A lot can happen in a months time and with a potential £40 million offer on the table, the Dutch boss maybe able to persuade his star man to make the switch.
