Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said that his team’s loss to Liverpool is one of his worst days in football.

United were beaten 3-0 in a Premier League clash at home by Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard scoring two penalties and Luis Suarez ending the tie with a well placed finish.

Red Devil’s captain Nemanja Vidic also saw red that resulted in a third penalty, but Gerrard couldn’t complete his hatrick – striking the post.

And former Everton prodigy Rooney admitted that the defeat was very hard to swallow.

"It's a nightmare. It's one of the worst days I've ever had in football," Rooney told MUTV.

"It's hard to take. You have to give Liverpool credit - they played well - but it's difficult to take.

"Nobody wants to lose, especially in this way, in your own stadium. It's not nice."

Manchester United have had an underwhelming season – sitting seventh in the table –and manager David Moyes was not able to explain his team’s dismal performance against the Reds.

"It is difficult to explain it. It wasn't what we expected," Moyes said.

"I thought the players looked in good shape and good fettle before the game.

"We just didn't get to the standards required to beat Liverpool. I have no qualms about the result.

"I have seen confident, well motivated, hard-working and conscientious players in training. I hadn't seen that.

"We are not doing as well as we should be. We are going to have to do better. We are going to have to make ourselves harder to beat and also to create more opportunities.

"I think the job was always going to be hard but if you are asking me is it harder than I thought I would say so, yes."

The Red Devils top four hopes are quickly fading, and they will need to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit against Olympiakos this Wednesday to have any hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
