Manchester United are set to confirm the £28million signing of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, Daily Mail reports.
Herrera has flown to London in order to agree personal terms after United matched the 24-year-old’s buy-out clause on Tuesday.
The Spaniard will be Man United manager Louis van Gaal’s first signing of the summer, with many more expected to arrive in the aftermath of the Red Devil’s worst ever Premier League finish.
Only a year ago then United manager David Moyes tabled a £24million bid for Herrera, but Bilbao were holding out on their release-clause fee.
With Herrera’s buy-out clause due to increase to £32million at the end of the month, executive chairman Ed Woodward moved in quickly to avoid another prolongation of the transfer.
Herrera has long been a target for Manchester United, ever since Alex Ferguson was still in charge at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal, currently managing the Dutch national team, is already putting his squad overhaul plans into motion after Patrice Evra and Antonio Valencia signed contract extensions.
United are also still attempting to sign Southampton’s Luke Shaw, but will be put off by the Saints’ new £40million valuation of the left-back.
