Manchester United have targeted AC Milan centre-back Philippe Mexes to bolster their defensive line, Football Italia reports.
According to Italian media publication Corriere dello Sport, the Red Devils have turned their attentions to the Frenchman after Bayern Munich look set to beat United to number one target Mehdi Benatia of Roma.
It has been reported that United are unwilling to match Roma’s £24million valuation for the Moroccan ace, and are looking at Mexes as a cheaper alternative.
A move for the AC Milan man is considerably easier to achieve, with the Serie A side also not involved in the UEFA Champions League and the 32-year-old on the last year of his current contract.
His signature would not break the bank and would add a great deal of experience and quality to the Red Devil’s back line.
Mexes is currently struggling to start at centre-back for Milan, with summer signings Adil Rami and Alex both adding some competition at the San Siro.
Meanwhile United are also keen to bring Angel di Maria, after preparing a £100million package to lure him over from Real Madrid.
