Footballer Iain Hume has backed Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason to make a full recovery from a serious head injury.

The 25-year-old underwent emergency treatment at St Mary's hospital in West London following a clash of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill during Sunday's match at Stamford Bridge.

It was revealed by the Tigers that Mason had fractured his skull in the incident, and they later confirmed in a statement that he has begun talking again.

The early indications are that Mason could return to action in time for next season, and Hume is confident that the midfielder will recover.

The Canada international suffered a similar injury when he was elbowed in the head while playing a match for Barnsley in 2008.

It took eight months for him to get back on the pitch, and he is hoping Mason will have a similar outcome.

While speaking to talkSPORT, Hume said:

"I got advised to do the right things at the right time. I wasn't pressured to do everything. I took it one day at a time and, thankfully, I recovered well enough to come back and play.

"Ryan got looked after right away. He was probably in hospital after half an hour, which is brilliant.

"He was in the best hands possible right away, which has put in him with the best chance possible to recover fully."
