Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has told midfielder Cheick Tiote to continue his leadership on the pitch after a stint as captain, as reported by the Evening Chronicle.

Tiote has lead the Toon out in recent games but now Fabricio Coloccini is working his way back to fitness he looks set to take over the armband once again when he returns next week.

Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for Tiote but after the sale of Yohan Cabaye in January, the loss of another main midfield man would be catastrophic for Pardew.

The former West Ham boss has heaped responsibility on the shoulders of the Ivory Coast international and at the age of 27, Tiote is now one of the experienced heads in the Magpies squad.

“He is an important player to us, and the captaincy when Colo [Fabricio Coloccini] was out changed him a little bit.

“He knows now that in my mind, he is our vice-captain and he has to play the role that that involves.

“It’s a big club, so he has a lot of responsibility and he’s dealing with it very well.”
