Newcastle United are plotting a £14million move for Montpellier star Remy Cabella, according to the Telegraph.

The Magpies are yet to launch an official bid, but are understood to have contacted the Ligue 1 club about the possibility of them selling their star man during this transfer window.

The news will add further speculation surrounding the future of Hatem Ben Arfa, who has been linked with a move away from Tyneside.

The Frenchman is a huge fans favourite at St James’s Park, but his failure to find any consistency to his game has been infuriating for manager Alan Pardew, who has used him mostly as an impact substitute in recent weeks.

The potential arrival of Cabella would provide further competition for Ben Arfa, who is already struggling to dislodge Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran in the starting wide positions.

23-year-old Cabella is regarded as one of the most exciting young players in France.

He is capable of playing on either wing, and has managed six goals in a struggling side this season.

Newcastle will hope they can complete the deal as quickly as possible and hold off interest from Premier League Champions Manchester United, who have previously been strongly linked.
