Newcastle United new signing Luuk De Jong may be thrown straight into first team football in the Tyne-Wear derby today, according to ITV Sport.

De Jong joined on loan for the remainder of the season on Thursday and with a striker crisis hitting Alan Pardew’s squad, he may be thrown straight into the starting line up in one of their biggest games of the season.

The 23 year old has not started a competitive game since way back in May but with Loic Remy suspended and Yoan Gouffran injured, De Jong may well start ahead of Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse.

The Tyne/Wear derby of course is a massive game in its own right but with Sunderland fighting relegation and Newcastle fans unhappy at the failure to replace Yohan Cabaye in their midfield it could be considered the biggest derby in years.

De Jong is set to make his move to Newcastle permanent in the summer but he will have to impress in order for that to happen with a similar situation surrounding Loic Remy.
