Ajax captain Siem de Jong

Newcastle have been handed a blow with the news that striker Siem de Jong could be out for months through injury.

The 25-year-old forward, who has made three appearances for the Premier League outfit, moved to the club from Ajax in July.

However initial indications show that he is likely to be out of action for a number of months after injuring his right thigh in training.

The news comes as a major blow to Alan Pardew’s winless Newcastle side, especially as they allowed Hatem Ben Arfa to join Hull on loan.

Ben Arfa was allowed to leave on deadline day along with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, and those decisions are already starting to look poor.

Now the former West Ham boss may be forced to rely on the largely untried new recruits Ayoze Perez and Facundo Ferreyra.

Midfielder Remy Cabella may also need to fill the gap left by the striker who has been hit by injury numerous times in recent seasons.

De Jong missed much of his last season with Ajax due to injury and also sat out a large part of Newcastle’s pre-season due to a foot injury.
