Newcastle have been foiled in their attempts to sign Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita, with a £4 million bid rejected according to The Sun.

The talented Netherlands international was one of the Amsterdam-based side's most consistent performers as Frank de Boer's men retained their Eredivisie title last term, and as such has caught the eye of Alan Pardew.

The player's agent has confirmed that there is interest from the Tyneside club, and is believed that Newcastle have bid £4 million for the prospect.

However, Ajax are thought to have knocked back the offer and will hold out for £8 million for their young star.

The fact that the Magpies are interested in Anita may well have something to do with the increasing speculation that current midfielder Cheik Tiote could be on his way out of the Sports Direct Arena.

Chelsea and Manchester United have been continually linked with the Ivory Coast international, and it is believed that Newcastle could have a battle on their hands this summer to keep him at the club.
