Newcastle United and Sunderland are set to go head to head for the signature of Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko according to the Daily Mirror.

Newcastle had been heavily linked with the French international earlier this season but it seems rivals Sunderland may pip them to the £2.5million signing.

Alan Pardew has to focus on replacing Demba Ba at St James’ Park and fixing his troubled back line with Fabricio Coloccini seemingly on his way back to South America.

Sunderland are desperate to add more quality to their squad after relying on Steven Fletcher for their main inspiration this season.

The player is hopeful of moving to the Premier League either this month or in the summer but Sunderland and Martin O’Neill are trying to get the deal done as soon as possible.

Everton and West Ham have also reportedly been watching the 22-year-old who has forced his way into a competitive France national side this season with impressive individual displays.
