The agent of FC Basel defender Fabian Schar has confirmed Arsenal have shown an interest in his client, according to the Metro.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the talented 21-year-old after a series of impressive performances in the Champions League, which included two victories over Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger is believed to be in the market for a new defender this January, with Laurent Koscielny out injured and the long term future of Thomas Vermaelen still up in the air.

And Schar’s agent has confirmed Arsenal are amongst a number of European clubs who have expressed an interest in the young centre back.

He is happy at Basle, where there is a great atmosphere within the club,’ said Dimitrios Papadopoulos.

‘Arsenal? I can confirm we have had contact with English clubs who want to sign him.

‘There is also interest from Italian and German clubs, but we have more contact from England.’

Basel are understood to be willing to listen to offers of around £6million for Schar, as they look to raise funds to strengthen their squad.

Schar has won five caps for Switzerland, and demonstrated his power in the air by managing three international goals already.
