Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao this month, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The future of vice-captain Patrice Evra is still up in the air and so United are looking to replace the Frenchman with an initial loan deal for Coentrao with the option to buy the full back in the summer.

Current second choice left back Alex Buttner has failed to impress boss David Moyes and so the Scotsman is keen to replace Evra, who may be leaving the club at the end of the season with a move back to France an option.

25 year old Coentrao has struggled to break into the Madrid side in recent months with Marcelo the clear first choice but his initial loan to United would give Moyes a much needed boost despite a comfortable 2-0 victory of Swansea last night.

The loan deal would only be viable if a deal with Evra was agreed, and PSG along with Monaco are keen to make that happen.
