Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is attempting to convince team-mate Angel Di Maria to stay at Real Madrid this season, Express reports.
Di Maria has been heavily linked with a move to Man United, who are favourites to sign the winger after Paris Saint-Germain dropped their interest in the Argentine.
Despite having a terrific season for the European champions least term, the Real Madrid board have been looking to offload Di Maria all summer but could be set to stay with star player Ronaldo keen for him not to depart.
According to Spanish media publication El Confidencial, Ronaldo claims the 26-year-old is a key component for the squad and will play a pivotal role in any success Los Blancos achieve this season.
Man United have reportedly made a giant £55million bid for the former Benfica ace, who has fallen down the midfield pecking order after the arrival of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos.
Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal has seemingly confirmed his interest to sign Di Maria, saying: “It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that [spend heavily]. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width.
“Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary.”
