AS Roma are close to agreeing a deal with Bayern Munich for Xherdan Shaqiri, at the expense of Liverpool, Daily Star reports.
Liverpool are set to lose out on Shaqiri after it was reported that the Serie A side are ready to use star defender Mehdi Benatia as make-weight in the switch.
After Shaqiri starred for Switzerland during the World Cup, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was keen in bringing over the 22-year-old winger to Anfield.
The former Basel man hasn’t had the best of times with Bayern Munich, unable to break into the first team under Pep Guardiola and is looking to leave the Allianz Arena.
With the sale of Luis Suarez, it was expected that Shaqiri would follow signings Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, and Emre Can as the Merseyside club attempt to mount another title challenge next season.
However it seems AS Roma are using Bayern Munich’s interest in Moroccan centre-back Mehdi Benatia to their advantage for a possible deal.
The Roma club will be returning to the Champions League as well next season and are busy in the transfer market, already signing Chelsea legend Ashley Cole.
