England boss Roy Hodgson has been left to rue a succession of injury withdrawals as his side prepare for Sunday's friendly in Brazil.

The Three Lions were already without Tom Cleverley, Jack Wilshere and captain Steven Gerrard for Wednesday's friendly with Republic of Ireland, before Kyle Walker withdrew after picking up an injury in a post-season friendly for Spurs.

Hodgson then lost Daniel Sturridge with an ankle injury midway through the first half at Wembley, ruling him out of the trip to Rio.

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck missed the game with a knee injury and is a severe doubt for the weekend. Jermain Defoe came on as a substitute but is not 100% fit after battling a persistent pelvic problem in recent weeks, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had to come off with a calf complaint.

The squad are set to fly out to Brazil on Thursday, meaning there is no time for Hodgson to call-up any replacements.

Speaking after Wednesday's game, which saw Frank Lampard cancel out Shane Long's opener, Hodgson was left to rue the injuries that have severely hampered his plans.

"I've only got about 15 or 16 players. The only players who didn't get on the field were Joleon Lescott and Jack Rodwell, who I'd brought into the squad for experience," he said.

"Jack's been out injured for most of the season, and only just came back for Manchester City. So it looks pretty much as if the 15 players who saw us through this game are going to have to see us through the next game as well."
