Both Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur overcame their opponents in the Capital One Cup as they booked their place in the quarter finals of the competition.

The Saints proved 3-2 victors over a resilient Stoke City while Tottenham secured a 2-0 win over Brighton as they advance to face Sheffield United and Newcastle United respectively.

Ronald Koeman continues his strong start to the season while Potters manager Mark Hughes was left disappointed after failing to capitalize on their 2-2 equalizer despite being two goals down.

He said: "We put in a huge effort in the second half," he said. "We needed to because in the first half we didn't really get anywhere near the intensity that I was hoping for in terms of making it a real cup tie.

"At 2-2 I felt we were in the ascendancy and we could go on and possibly win it from a situation where at 2-0 down you think it's going to be very hard against a very good Southampton team."

However, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was less focused on his latest victory as he is already planing for this weekend's clash with Aston Villa after congraduating his players for a well earned victory.

“The Premier League, Europa League and Capital One Cup are all different competitions but afterwards we always analyse each player for the next game,” he said.

“We always put the strongest side out that we can. We have a strong squad. Soldado, Kane and Adebayor are all different players and we are in more than one competition.

“After we go to Aston Villa we go to Asteras in Greece, so when you play in all these competitions you need all the players.

“The quarter-final was our objective and we are happy to be there because it is a realistic chance of a trophy.

“I am happy for the players because we needed to feel victory again after Sunday. All the players played well.”
