The Dutchman was a vital part of the Saints promotion to the Premier League back in 2012 but has now found himself on the fringes of the squad, with a place on the bench his most likely position each week.
The long serving 30 year old is at the stage of his career when he needs to be playing regular football to ensure he can play for years to come at a good level.
Hooiveld admitted that he asked to leave St Mary’s in the summer but was told he couldn’t, however a deal in the summer to see him possibly head back to Holland is viable.
“I considered leaving during the January transfer window but the manager told me it wasn’t possible,” he said.
“But I will sit down at the table with him to discuss it once more during the summer.
“I’m in the squad for every game, but it will be very hard for me to get back into the starting 11 and I am hugely disappointed. There are two other players ahead of me in the pecking order.”
