Southampton are looking to complete the signing of Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell, but face a fight with Napoli for his signature, according to the Daily Star.
Napoli boss Rafael Benitez is an admirer of the former Everton man, and is ready to firm up his interest with an official offer of £8million.
Southampton boss Ronald K0eman has also set this sights on the 23-year-old, with the Saints desperate to add some new signings following the mass exodus of players at the club this summer.
Southampton have money to spend, having received close to £100million in transfer fees this summer, following the departures of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers.
Koeman is looking to implement a style of possession based football on the south coast, and sees Rodwell as the ideal man for his midfield.
Whilst the young midfielder is tempted by broadening his horizons with a move to Naples, he may well regard a move to St Mary’s as the safe bet at this point in his career, having taken a step backwards following his £12million move to Manchester City in 2012.
