Southampton’s rollercoaster week has taken another turn today as Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin is expected to make a shock takeover bid, according to the Daily Mirror.

Saints chairman Nicola Cortese resigned this week after a long and successful spell in charge at the club and many feared that manager Mauricio Pochettino and star players such as Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert could be on their way too as owner Katharina Liebherr put her foot down.

Pochettino has now committed himself to the club but wants talks with Liebherr to clear the air and discuss the possible takeover of Wang, who is China’s richest man with his company valued in the region of £19billion.

Wang is eyeing a £175million bid to take over at St Mary’s that include a shock return of Cortese who would be employed in his old role that will see him take charge of day to day boardroom duties.

Southampton would become the richest Premier League club surpassing both Chelsea and Manchester City in financial terms and current owner Liebherr is willing to accept the offer from China.

Pochettino is reportedly aware of the takeover bid and that could have been one reason he didn’t follow Cortese out of the door.
