Rodriguez was in clear pain, clutching his knee, when he was stretchered off in the first half at Manchester City yesterday lunchtime with what appears to be serious ligament damage.
The former Burnley forward was expected to be in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the World Cup this summer after a mightily impressive season for the Saints.
Lambert, who is also in Hodgson’s thoughts, has revealed the anguish that Rodriguez was showing in the dressing room after the game with the inevitable lay off coming to the fore.
“We are absolutely gutted for him,” he said.
“He is a great lad and for that to happen to him today so close to the World Cup is devastating for him.
“My heart goes out to him. He is absolutely devastated in the dressing room.”
