Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes the Black Cats are still set to sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini despite a delay in the deal, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Wearside club have agreed a £14million fee with Liverpool and Borini has rubber stamped his contract; however paperwork is holding the deal up – So much so that the Italian striker started for Brendan Rodgers’ side against Preston in a pre-season friendly yesterday.

Poyet is keen to get the 23-year-old to the Stadium of Light on a permanent deal and believes it could be all sorted this week.

“We’ve agreed terms with Liverpool and we are waiting for the documents to be signed and then we’ll move on from there,” Poyet said.

“Like any other deal you do, first you need to sort out the clubs and then you start working with the player

“I’m hoping we can have him because he knows how much it would mean for us to have a player like Fabio.”
