Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has expressed fears that Southampton defender Luke Shaw could follow Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur, Daily Star reports.
Man United have been close in completing a £27million transfer for Shaw for some time, with newly appointed manager Louis van Gaal looking for youth in the defensive area.
Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will both be leaving the club this summer, however veteran Patrice Evra signed a new one-year deal to remain at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman’s first team role will be lessened if Shaw was to arrive from the Saints.
But Pallister, who played for the Red Devils from 1989-1998, is worried that the 18-year-old starlet could opt for a move to Tottenham to follow his former boss.
“He [Pochettino] has that relationship with him already,” Pallister told talkSPORT.
“I heard Shaw saying how delighted he was to play for him and what he has done for his game.
“It could be a spanner in the works for United, who were said to be close to doing a deal for Shaw.
“If you have got that personal insight into a player and that personal relationship, it gives you an added advantage.”
Manchester United are hoping that their contract offer of £140,000-a-week will repel any interest from the Tottenham manager.
