Vertonghen enjoyed a decent World Cup and is set to return to north London next week to begin his pre-season training with Spurs.
Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for the 27-year-old after legend Carlos Puyol left the club at the end of last season and new boss Luis Enrique doesn’t fancy Javier Mascherano as his long term successor.
Vertonghen was unhappy at his lack of action in the centre of the Tottenham defence last season, mainly used at left back, and a switch to Barcelona or another major European club could be of interest.
Agent Mustapha Nakhli has admitted that several clubs are interested in his client but a decision has not yet been made on his future.
“Several teams are interested in Jan,” Nakhli told Het Nieuwsblad.
“I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them.
“Tottenham is not a small club. It’s too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We’ll see.”
