Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic: Jermain Defoe scores five
Tottenham ran riot at a rain soaked White Hart Lane this afternoon, with a 9-1 victory against Wigan Athletic.
The win took Tottenham back in the Champions League places, but it was the manner of it that will have shocked most neutrals today. Jermain Defoe scored 5 goals in 36 second half minutes and the quality of his finishes would certainly have impressed the watching Fabio Capello.
Aaron Lennon also impressed throughout and with a goal and three assists to his name to mark his return from injury providing another reminder to the England boss of the wide man’s abilities and what a handful he can be on his day.
Harry Redknapp singled out the Tottenham No.7 for special praise and felt that nobody could handle him and Niko Kranjcar on the wings today:
“He’s a fantastic talent. Eric Edman was a good player at Tottenham, did a great job here and he is a good player but he had a difficult day today with Aaron.
“But anybody would have had a hard day today when he’s in that type of form.
“Niko Kranjcar on the other side was absolutely fantastic as well today. I felt the skill, the ability, the passing, everything he did today. He deserved that goal at the end because I thought he was magnificent.” (SkySports)
Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar and a David Bentley completed the rout in what is the second highest ever score in Premier League history.
