Arsenal and Manchester United have received a boost in their chase for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia, due to the Italian club dropping talks with suitors Bayern Munich, Daily Star reports.
Bayern lost Javi Martinez to a knee injury last week, which has made the Moroccan international a number one priority for the Bundesliga champions.
Benatia was also extremely keen to make the switch to Pep Guardiola’s side, but it now seems that Roma are unsatisfied with Bayern’s offer for their star man.
According to sources from Italy, Bayern were unwilling to spend more than £24million for the highly rated centre-back, while Roma were holding out for £30million.
And if the German club do not meet Roma’s demands, then they see whether Arsenal or Man United are willing to pay the 27-year-old’s full asking price.
Roma directors Walter Sabatini and Mauro Baldissoni were both in England last week, holding talks with the Premier duo over a transfer for their want-away star.
United are desperately looking for a world class centre-back to follow £60million Real Madrid ace Angel di Maria before the end of the transfer window.
Arsenal are also keen to bring in a central defender after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen, with Toby Alderweireld and Benatia the Gunners’ top targets.
