Manchester United have been boosted in their chase for Arsenal star Thomas Vermaelen after the defender rejected a new contract offer from the Gunners, Daily Mail reports.
With Vermaelen’s contract expiring next summer, Arsenal were hoping to keep the centre-back at the Emirates by offering him new terms, but the Belgian has snubbed their approach.
And with the Gunners unwilling to lose Vermaelen for free in a year’s time, the 28-year-old is expected to depart before the transfer window closes with Manchester United, Barcelona, and Napoli interested in his services.
However Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to sell Vermaelen to a club outside England, which will dent Man United’s hopes of landing their target.
The London club have already rejected a £7million offer from the Red Devils previously, while they expect La Liga giants Barcelona to make a move in the next few days.
Vermaelen was purchased from Ajax back in 2009 in a £8million deal, and established himself quickly as Arsenal’s first choice centre-back.
However injuries and bad form last year saw Vermaelen fall behind in the pecking order to Laurent Kolscielny and Per Mertesacker, which has him now considering his options.
