Dutch legend Ronald De Boer believes Manchester United striker Robin van Persie could leave Old Trafford in the summer if world class players are not signed, as reported by the Evening Standard.

Van Persie has recently criticised the tactics and style of play currently on show from the Red Devils and the striker has failed to find the same form from last season that helped United win the league.

De Boer, currently assistant manager at Ajax, has a good relationship with RVP and admits that the striker is unhappy at present.

The former Barcelona and Rangers playmaker claims that if United fail to sign world class players this summer, van Persie is contemplating jumping ship in order to win trophies.

‘Van Persie wants to compete for trophies and everything this year looks out of sight,’ De Boer told the Manchester Evening News.

‘It’s very disappointing for a player of his quality. I don’t think he’s enjoying the football United are playing. He’s a team player but he likes to play beautiful football and that isn’t the case at the moment.’

‘Man United need to refresh their squad. Some of their players have had fantastic careers but it’s time to move over and let some youngsters come through.

‘Robin feels that, if this is happening, he will of course stay. But, if there’s no investment in new, young, great players from other clubs, then he will move.’
