Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted that he wants to give his current centre halves a chance in the first team before spending money to replace Nemanja Vidic, as reported by Sky Sports.
Vidic joins Inter Milan on a free transfer at the end of the season but will remain club captain until then when he plays.
With Rio Ferdinand coming to the end of his career too, the central defensive area at Old Trafford will need an overhaul and Moyes is looking towards Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to fill that void.
Moyes does plan to spend some money in the summer to improve the squad, but a centre back may not be a priority if the young guns step up to the plate from now until the end of this season.
“It doesn’t change but we’ve got a few more games to go before the end of the season and I’ve got some young centre-halves I want to see,” Moyes said.
“I want them to show me what they’re capable of and I’ll be looking to introduce them in the last month or two.”
