Manchester United made a transfer deadline day bid of £38 million for Brazilian wonderkid Neymar, according to The Sun.

The Premier League champions brought Robin van Persie, Shinji Kagawa, Nick Powell, Angelo Henriquez and Alexander Buttner to Old Trafford in the off-season, but were off the radar on the last day of the window.

However, the tabloid newspaper have revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson tried to capture the talented South American attacker hours before the window closed, but the player opted to stay playing for Santos as he wants to play in Brazil until the 2014 World Cup.

If a deal had been agreed it would have been the joint highest purchase of a player from outside the UK along with Manchester City's capture of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid.

Neymar has hit 113 goals in 190 games for Santos, and has been widely speculated with a move to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea in the recent past.
