Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that Angel di Maria was replaced as a precautionary measure, rather than because he was injured.
The Argentinean winger made his Premier League debut against Premier League new boys Burnley following his British record transfer from Real Madrid.
But the £60 million winger hobbled off the field of play with 75’ minutes gone at Turf Moor leaving fans fearing the worst.
However van Gaal was quick to allay fears that the 26-year old has suffered any major damage.
Van Gaal said: “Di Maria took a kick to his calf and I didn’t want to take any risks with him,”
“He’s played for 90 minutes only once for Real Madrid (since returning from the World Cup) so I think it was better to bring him off.”
It was a similar story for former Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata who was also substituted before the game was up.
“Mata is okay, he had a little bit of cramp and I also thought it was better to bring him off,” said the former Netherlands manager.
