In remarkable scenes at the El Madrigal on Sunday, Barcelona defender Dani Alves nonchalantly responded to a vile racist gesture by casually eating a banana thrown his way. After the game, the Brazilian even went so far as to thank the Villarreal fan who threw the fruit as the full back claimed it “gave me the energy to put two more crosses in for our goals.”
Alves’ reaction drew great media attention and has now received great support from his fellow professionals. Neymar showed solidarity with his team-mate on Instagram by posting a picture of himself eating a banana with the handle #weareallmonkeys written in four languages.

Before long, numerous other players posted their own pictures of support.

Either way, Alves’ reaction and Neymar’s post have spawned a fascinating social media trend that continues to grow and hopefully raises awareness of the need to eradicate racism from world football.
