Tottenham Hotspur's visit to the Etihad was as action packed and dramatic as people hoped ahead of the weekend. With both sides vying for a top 4 position and potentially a league title, three points were absolutely huge for Guardiola and Pochettino.

The two managers will have to settle for a share of the spoils after some classy goals and calamitous goalkeeper led to a 2-2 draw.

Spurs will be the happier of the two sides given that at one point City looked like running away with it. At 2-0 down, there looked to be no way back for the Lilywhites.

Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son had other ideas though and their finishes past a helpless Claudio Bravo rescued a point for the visitors.

Both sides could now fall further behind Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge side host Hull at home on Sunday and must fancy their chances of extending their Premier League lead.

Here are FIVE lessons to take from Saturday's match at the Etihad...

Man City games are never dull

Say what you like about this Manchester City but their games have not been dull this season. Drama, goals, bad defending, great attacking; it's all present when Guardiola's men take the field.

This was the fourth City game in a row that three or more goals were scored. There have been 17 goals scored in their matches in January alone.

That excitement all culminated in the last 10 minutes, with City pushing on, their new signing Gabriel Jesus put the ball into the back of the net, only to have it ruled offside.

As you can see, he was already celebrating wildly.

Spurs' wing-backs are as effective as ever

Danny Rose and Kyle Walker had a tough shift operating on both flanks for Spurs but came through another test at the highest level with flying colours.

It was Walker's incredible cross from the right hand side that led to Dele Alli pulling one back, while at the other end Danny Rose performed a match saving last man tackle to deny City another goal.

Both were massive moments in the game and showed that Spurs continue to rely on the performances of their men on the flanks. Are there better defensive players out wide for any other team this season?

You can never count Spurs out

The spirit shown by Mauricio Pochettino's side is typical of the way they've gone about their business this season.

Spurs have now come back to salvage a draw or better in the last four games where they've lost the lead. It's that kind of determination that means you'll never really be able to count them out this season.

Yes, Chelsea can go nine points ahead of them tomorrow but the Lilywhites are always going to dig in and find results from somewhere, making them a very tough outfit indeed.

City are poor at protecting leads

Saturday evening's match was the second occasion this season in a high profile game at the Etihad that City have allowed a team to get back into the match.

Against Chelsea they were 1-0 up before being blitzed in a 3-1 defeat. It was a similar collapse against Spurs.

City's inability to see out games with a solid defensive display could be the undoing of them over the next few months. They're conceding far too many goals right now and are at risk of dropping out of the top four completely.

Hugo Lloris is human

Hugo Lloris is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and his two horrendous mistakes on Saturday evening prove that even the best 'keepers on the planet have their off days.

It was a match to forget for the French international, missing his header that led to Sane's first then dropping the ball into the path of Kevin De Bruyne for City's second.

Who knows what might have happened without the errors? That's the question that will be running through Lloris' mind until Spurs next take the field.
