The journalists at England’s press conference two days ago had some fun with Manchester City star, James Milner, when ribbing him over his thoughts about the parody Twitter account ‘Boring James Milner’.
The midfielder has long been accused of being of being a ‘safe’ option for England, with Roy Hodgson often opting to field Milner in areas of play where a more ‘adventurous’ choice would be a more popular selection.
Well Milner is set to star in a new role for the national side when he takes on Ecuador tonight, as Hodgson is set to field the midfielder in the unfamiliar role of right-back.
Current England first choice, Glen Johnson, has come in for some criticism recently after some less-than-assured displays defensively, and the England coach looks as though he’s prepared to experiment with his players on the eve of the World Cup in Brazil.
Here is how Twitter reacted to this unexpected news, and it’s fair to say England fans aren’t too put off by the thought:
James Milner at right back tonight. Couldn’t do ANY worse than Johnson……could he?! #England

James Milner at right back could be a good shout by Hodgson — Lucas Hollingworth (@king_lucas_) June 4, 2014
James Milner could be a perfect right back in my opinion.

James Milner at right back tonight? I like Milner, I think Johnson is terrible. I think this could be a clever move by Woy — Sam Goldman (@samgoldman91) June 4, 2014
