The Welshman, who signed for Real Madrid for a record £86million fee this summer, was wanted by the Catalan club last summer. Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett met twice with the club ahead of a potential £50million move.
However, Barnett told the current La Liga champions to wait two seasons, stating: “he wasn’t ‘mature enough to leave his family environment and Britain and start life in another league.”
Barcelona eventually spent that £50million this summer, securing the services of Brazilian starlet Neymar. The 21-year-old has scored twice in the league this season, both in the club’s 4-1 over Real Vallodolid.
It will be relieving news for Spurs fans, who saw their club spend that extra £36million on bringing Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen to White Hart Lane in August.
Bale has played just 2 La Liga matches in the white of Barca’s rivals Real Madrid, scoring on his debut against Villarreal. The Welshman, who earns around £300,000-a-week at the Santiago Bernabeu, could have been teammates with Lionel Messi instead of Cristiano Ronaldo, had his agent not pulled the plug on a deal last summer.
The 24-year-old has been included in Chris Coleman’s Wales squad ahead of their final World Cup Qualifiers.
Should Bale have joined Barcelona last summer? Which club is more attractive to play for?
