The 31st of August is always a hotly anticipated day in the diary of any football fan, the final day of the transfer window always brings excitement, shock and in most cases disappointment.

However for us Shrewsbury fans this year the day came and went like any other with no players signing and more importantly no players leaving.

Since the opening day of the campaign where the team were defeated away at Sheffield United by the smallest of margins it has been very clear to all of our fans that a striker is needed.

Last season’s top scorer James Collins left the club in June signing for Paolo Di Canio’s hotly tipped Swindon Town where he has made a fine start, netting a hat trick away at Premiership side Stoke City in last weeks league one clash.

The biggest fear for most Shrewsbury fans going into this campaign was that we had failed to replace Collins whilst other Shrewsbury fans maintained a sense of optimism, believing that we had enough going forward with Morgan and Gornell. This doesn’t appear to be the case, despite dominating our last two games against Tranmere and Stevenage respectively we have failed to get more than one goal and these two teams have capitalised on this and grabbed equalisers.

With an upcoming game away at Notts County lying ahead this Saturday fans will be biting their nails as to whether or not we can find a way to capitalise on our opportunities and get the much needed goals. Our current strike force has 1 goal between them in four games whilst our other two goals this campaign have come from winger Paul Parry.

Parry himself can play up front and may well be an option that Graham Turner may want to take a look at whilst we also still have the option of Tom Bradshaw on the bench who has impressed in his brief 20 minute cameos that he has been given so far this season. There is also Ryan Doble, the Wales u21 international signed up the day following James Collins’ departure, he is yet to even appear on our subs bench and looked of very little use in pre season.

We are quickly adapting to life in League one and our opening few games have shown us we have nothing to fear however if we are to be serious competitiors in this division then we need to bring in that elusive 20 goal striker and fast. Graham Turner has confirmed that he is hoping to bring in some loanees soon so fingers crossed we can get a deal done and fast.
