I do agree that the Carroll carnival was ridiculous, and that English players cost over-the-odds within the Premier League, however. Just that I think that to point to Bale’s case as an example of this trend’s expansion, would be harsh and unfair.

This is hardly a phenomenon confined to English players, or even the English league. How much did Silva and Mata cost, again, to pry them away from Valencia? 24m and 23.5m, respectively. Slot Dempsey into the striker role, for now. The guy has earned his first-team place, and while he’s not ideal as a CF, with Holtby feeding him balls we might see a good return.
