What will Norwich City’s squad look like at the start of next season?

Tagged: Norwich City
Very different to how it looks now that’s for sure. Glenn Roeder has already said that as many as fifteen players could be leaving Carrow Road this summer with current first-team regulars such as Gary Doherty, Mark Fotheringham and Darren Huckerby all with their contracts set to expire.

With the talismanic Dion Dublin set to bring the curtain down on his career, our six loan players all returning to their parent clubs and some of our youngsters also set to be shown the door, Glenn Roeder could be down to the absolute bare bones.

I think Fotheringham has earned a new contract and as our captain he should definitely be staying but Doherty I’m not so sure about. I think if Roeder can bring in Martin Taylor, Alex Pearce or someone of a similar ilk then he will let Doherty go but the Doc has had a decent season and I would be happy for him to stay.

It’s clear that Darren Huckerby won’t be staying and I think he’s had enough of getting kicked about week-in week-out.

So what will we need? Matty Gilks has already told the local press that he won’t be happy to sit twiddling his thumbs again next season so we could be in the market for a new number two. Why didn’t we just loan Joe Lewis?!

Adam Drury should be back fit and refreshed, Simon Lappin may even return permanently but Bertrand and Camara will be returning to Chelsea and Derby respectively. I don’t rate Camara so wouldn’t like to see him back but if Glenn can persuade Avram Grant that Ryan would be best served with another year here, then that would be great.

Otsemebor is becoming a big favourite at right-back for Norwich but we have no real cover. Juan Velasco has not re-emerged since his horror show against Watford but is only on a contract until May and Michael Spillane or Darrell Russell have been picked ahead of Andrew Cave-Brown previously, so he doesn’t seem to be rated by Glenn.

Fozzy, Russell and Pattison have all done well at times under Glenn but we still need someone who can make that ‘eye of the needle’ pass and create something from nothing.

With Huckerby leaving the left-wing role is going to be a huge role to fill as it looks unlikely that Rob Eagle, Bally Smart or Luke Daley are ready to step up. Someone similar to Cardiff’s Paul Parry would do me very nicely.

Croft is a player reborn and with Chadwick fit again the right-wing position is probably the one position we can leave alone.

Up front is where a big chunk of our problems have been though and the place that needs proper investment. With no Dion, or Ched Evans and Ryan Jarvis almost certainly being sent on his bike, that leaves us with Jamie Cureton and Chris Martin. Basically, we will need a whole new front line.
It’s going to be an extremely tough job for Glenn and his managerial team and a lot will of course depend on how much money the board can give him to play with. Glenn has already said that he will use the loan market again and he has already proved that he has the contacts to make things happen.

I just have a feeling it’s going to be a stressful summer for us Canary fans trawling the web for transfer news and don’t forget, it’s far from certain that players we want to keep will still be here to. Marshall, Semmy and Croft could all be in demand and if any of them kick up enough of a fuss there’s little we’ll be able to do.

We saw it happen with Earnie and Etuhu before this season so before you say “Glenn will never let that happen,” remember that football is a funny old game and we may have to be patient while Glenn does his best to work his magic.

Who would you like to see City sign?

I would go for Bertrand, Pearce and Evans back on loan, Martin Taylor, Paul Parry, Brian Howard, Peter Whittingham, Martin Paterson and Shola Ameobi if Stoke mess up promotion. Let me know your choices in the comment box below.
