A STRIKING opportunity that Liverpool shouldn't turn down

Tagged: Liverpool

Football FanCast reporter Juan Vasquez feels that Liverpool should make a January swoop for Arshavin.

If there were any doubts that Liverpool didn't have the stomach for a Championship challenge then that was well and truly dismissed with their impressive reverse at the City of Manchester stadium. Determination, plenty of heart; Rafa has this team looking like champions and I think I speak for many a neutral when I say it will be great for the English game if they can finally land a title.

It is still early days of course, still plenty of work to be done and no doubt Rafa will be taking stock of the current squad and areas in which he feels need to be improved. Nobody knows what the transfer situation will be like in January - given the reprieve Hicks and Gillett were given from the banks - and whether the Spaniard will have to continue to raise his own funds.

I look at Liverpool's squad and for me it is extremely solid, but one area that certainly could be enhanced is the final third. Torres and Keane are more than adequate when fit, but the fear of injury, in what will be a long season, must always be a pressing concern. I don't believe Kuyt or Babel are adequate understudies, so the need to bring in another front man in January must surely take priority, as Liverpool remain pretty secure in the defensive thirds.

One player that has readily made himself available for a transfer in January is Zenit's Andrei Arshavin, whose agent has claimed that his client is keen to move to a top four outfit within the Premier League. I don't need to go into the ins and outs of the players talents because for most Liverpool fans that will obviously be evident, but he would offer Rafa Benitez something different in the attack. He has the ability to make something out of nothing with a moment of brilliance and would be perfect in the role just in behind Torres. For all Liverpool's talent they do possess a shortage of match winners within the squad and that is something that their title rivals have in abundance. You only have to look at United with their trio of strikers and with the likes of Scholes, Ronaldo chipping in as well, to show the lack of depth Liverpool possess and you do fear it could cost them dear if it is not addressed.

So should Liverpool make a move for Arshavin in January - or for striking reinforcements should they look elsewhere?

I thank Rafa should do a
I thank Rafa should do a show similar to X Factor but for football players, could call it the F Factor and let the pubic decide which players he should sign. It could run from August to December, I am sure LFC wouldn’t mind giving Rafa time off to do the show. What do you guys think? Isn’t this just a totally awesome idea?
