FanCast columnist Fanos Kyriacou feels it is about time that Gus Poyet
took the bull by the horns.
Much has been said about our worst start to a
league campaign in 96 years and everyone has an opinion on who is to blame. The
lack of leadership at the club from right at the top to all the way down is
something that I have spoken about many times before and it's something that
needs to be addressed quickly before we find ourselves with too big a gap to
make up, because make no mistake about it we are in a very dangerous position
and relegation is a real possibility.
There is one man at the club who should now
take the bull by the horns and use his enthusiasm and knowledge of English
football to motivate the squad and that man is Gus Poyet. Much has been made of
Juande Ramos' limited grasp of the English language but Poyet has no such
problems and perhaps we should be looking at him for the inspiration we need.
The one thing that has always struck me about Poyet as a player and as a coach is his sheer love and enthusiasm for the game. I'm not sure what goes on behind the scenes at Spurs or what is said in the dressing room before the game and at half time but you have to assume that Poyet has his say. Personally I think if any player fails to get motivated and inspired by our number two then I'm not sure what can inspire them.
Lately however all we seem to see of Poyet is him coming out after the games and trying to explain why the team is not performing and he looks a shadow of the up-beat confident guy we saw last season. It is crucial that Gus gets back that enthusiasm and energy that he is renowned for so that it can rub off on the team.
Poyet has got a lot to prove in the coaching side of the game but I do think he has the makings of an excellent coach and perhaps now is the time to enhance his reputation further by getting those underperforming players at White Hart Lane to start winning back the respect of the fans. Players such as Jermain Jenas who consistently flatters to deceive could well benefit from Poyet's leadership.
If Juande Ramos was to leave the club any time soon I am quite sure that Gus Poyet will be handed the reins but it is now where he needs to earn his reputation and use his knowledge and language skills to really bring home to the players what Ramos is trying to do.
