Even though Liverpool are desperate for a winger with pace in the absence of Sadio Mane, Jurgen Klopp has allowed Lazar Markovic to join Hull on loan for the rest of the season. The Serbian, a £20m signing in the summer of 2014, was tipped to be a star at Anfield, but he struggled to make any impact in his debut campaign before being shunted off to Fenerbahce for 2015/16.[ad_pod id='now-tv' align='centre']There were rumours of his potential return for the current campaign, but again Markovic departed on loan over the summer to head to Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Sporting CP, but the Lisbon giants were so underwhelmed by his showings that they sent him back to Merseyside early.

It’s now been confirmed that Markovic didn’t even stop off at Liverpool and instead has journeyed to Humberside to join Marco Silva’s Tigers overhaul, which has shocked a few Liverpool fans given how devoid of pace they have been in wide areas since Mane jetted off to represent Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

But, the numbers really back up Klopp’s call…

Indeed, Markovic was abysmal the green and white of Sporting, playing just 211 minutes of league football across six outings. In that time he failed to register an assist, no shock given that he created just three chances, while he was only successful with five take-ons – an awful return for a wide player blessed with speed and technique. Granted, he notched a goal, but that came against Vitoria de Guimaraes, hardly a superpower of European football!

Has Klopp made the correct call? It looks like it…
