Monreal is simply the replacement of an injured player. The move never would’ve been made if Gibbs were still healthy. Arsenal needed to bring in more talent to make a move up the table.

Arsenal need someone to control the midfield, someone who can put the team on his back at times. Arteta, Wilshere, and Cazorla would thrive with powerful presence to rally around. Diaby is quality, but isn’t that man.

To sign a £12.5million full back was a bizarre decision when Wenger needed to put the money towards a defensive midfielder, a centre back and maybe even a striker. Newcastle have shown again that the Gunners could have got all of the above for the same price they got Monreal. That said, the young wing back is an excellent player and will become a good investment, the timing however, was strange.
