Aston Villa secured a vital 1-0 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to the relief of under pressure boss Paul Lambert.
Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the decisive goal in the 15th minute in a scrappy affair.
The Black Cats had dominated the early stages and had 74% possession for the first half but Villa were decisive on the break and when Vito Mannone mis-controlled a back pass, Agbonlahor was in no mood to spurn the gift he was given as he slotted home.
Despite not seeing a lot of the ball Villa were stern in defence with Ron Vlaar impressing before he had to come off. Benteke and Agbonlahor also worked well in tandem when the Villains were forming counter attacks.
The hosts had a real sense of frustration all day as Ji, Fletcher, then in the second half Borini and Giaccherini continued to waste chances to put Sunderland level.
Poyet threw on Jozy Altidore late on as his side failed to break down the Villa defence. This leaves the Black Cats three points off safety, as Aston Villa secured their first win in six matches.
