From the honeymoon of the opening weekend of the season, the football season has now started for real. We witnessed Manchester United huff and puff to a win on Friday night, so the pressure was really on Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City today, with results needed to keep the gap at the top as low as possible.

Arsenal got the day going at Crystal Palace, picking up their first win of the new Premier League season. Olivier Giroud’s excellent acrobatic volley and an own goal from Damien Delaney either side of a great effort from Joel Ward were enough for Arsene Wenger’s side, and eased the growing pressure following the home loss to West Ham seven days ago.

Man City and Chelsea then faced off in an early title contenders clash, in which the Sky Blues looked by far the stronger candidates to lift the big prize. Goals from Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho settled the clash, leaving Jose Mourinho scratching his head with one point from two games and a Community Shield loss.

As well as there being plenty of action on the pitch, there was lots going on off it, too. Here is the best of the social media activity from a great day of action.

Not looking like such a great signing now for Arsenal… Petr Cech has fewer clean sheets in goal this season than right-back, Carl Jenkinson.

You won’t find any trophies up there, Arsene…

The best striker in the league?

So, that new stand needs filling then, City?
