Gonzalo Higuain has been one of the best strikers in the world for a number of years now, but rarely does he get the recognition he deserves.

Whilst he has worked hard and got his head down at Napoli in Serie A, various other strikers have been touted for transfers season-after-season. 24 goals in his first season in Italy was followed by another 29 the following season, before he truly came into his own this campaign. A 19-minute, second half treble against Frosinone made him the first player to score 36 goals in a single Serie A campaign, beating Gunnar Nordahl’s 1949/50 record of 35. The win propelled Napoli into second place and has well-and-truly sent the transfer rumours into overdrive. Finally the Argentine is getting the recognition he so richly deserves and there is one team in the Premier League that would benefit from his services more than any other...

Arsene Wenger is on the ropes at the Emirates Stadium, and everyone knows it. Never before during his tenure at the club has he been so under the microscope, and the signing of Higuain could well and truly pull him through this sticky patch in his managerial career.

Whilst Danny Welbeck has struggled with injury and Theo Walcott with form, the South American is a man who would nigh-on guarantee goals and results. Olivier Giroud does a job for the Gunners, but it’s clear he is not the man to lead them back to glory long-term, and Wenger must be thinking about who may be best to help him out of a tight corner.

And there is no better option in the world than Higuain right now. His goalscoring dominance in Serie A this season has been truly astounding - only Paulo Dybala of Juventus has come close to him in Italy, putting 23 goals away this season. Higuain scored 27 goals for Real Madrid in the 2009/10 season under Manuel Pellegrini, but alongside him he had Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. With all due respect to those he's playing with at Napoli, that was another level of quality and he’s gone above and beyond this term with the players he had alongside him.

That is extremely positive news for Arsenal: a player with so much quality he can perform whoever he has playing alongside him. Whilst Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon have been excellent, to boast a goalscoring record up there with Luis Suarez is some feat. It’s also very exciting that this talent is out there, away from the flashy lights and non-stop press we hear about in Spain.

There’s little doubt that there are few better around than Higuain at the moment, but he will be in hot demand all over Europe. If Arsenal can win the race for the Argentine, and most importantly stump up the funds needed, to bring him to England, they’ve got a guaranteed goalscorer. It’s in your hands, Arsene.
