Arsenal could be set to smash their transfer record once again this summer to land Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal, with Arsene Wenger having hinted that he’s interested in the star.
The Gunners surprised the footballing world last year by spending £42.5m to land Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a late swoop.
However, despite Wenger’s reputation as a frugal manager he is thought to be ready to shell out £44m to secure Vidal from Juventus in the coming months.
The midfield general has been one of the stars of the World Cup in recent weeks with his all-action displays having helped to set up a last 16 clash with hosts Brazil for his country, and the north London chief says that he admires his talents:
“Vidal is one of the best midfielders in the world,” he is quoted by The Metro.
“He has everything. Incredible stamina, perfect timing. He’s a marathon athlete who plays football.”
At 27, the South American is entering the peak years of his career and has been wowing Serie A crowds in recent seasons for the Old Lady.
Juve are under no pressure financially to sell and are keen to keep their man, but Arsenal are understood to be willing to offer a massive fee to tempt the Turin giants into doing business.
Wenger is thought to be considering selling Mikel Arteta and is aware that Abou Diaby’s fitness record is poor, making a mew central player a priority heading into the new campaign.
