Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Costa Rican hot-shot Joel Campbell will be given a first-team chance at Arsenal.

The pacey striker starred in his nation’s shock World Cup Group D win against Uruguay on Saturday, netting once and providing an assist in the 3-1 comeback victory – largely seen as the shock of the tournament so far.

Despite having been a Gunners player since 2011, the 21-year-old is yet to make an appearance in the red shirt after being sent out on loan to Lorient, Real Betis and most recently Olympiakos – whom he scored for against Manchester United in the Champions League – due to work permit problems and a need for first-team experience.

Even though he has performed well at club level and for his country, there have been some doubts as to whether or not Campbell would be given a chance at Arsenal, but Wenger told the Daily Mail that the forward is very much in his plans ahead of next season:

“He will definitely come back to us for pre-season,

“He is maturing well.”

Campbell’s Costa Rica face Italy next before a potential crunch encounter with England.
