Arsenal are edging closer to a deal for Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez after making an enquiry for the Barcelona attacker, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The 25-year-old has been one of the World Cup’s top performers so far, playing a key role for his nation who will take part in the knockout phase of the competition after taking six points from their three Group B games.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been strongly linked with Sanchez in recent weeks, but now it appears that Arsene Wenger is ready to steal his signature.

Although the Frenchman is understood to have made Mario Balotelli his top target, he is desperate to add more quality to his squad after last season’s title collapse.

Juventus have been mooted as the most likely destination for Sanchez, who is said to be available for transfer despite his impressive 2013/14 campaign in Barca’s first-team – he netted 21 goals.

The South American forward is a versatile player and is able to play on either flank or in a central role, which is thought to appeal to Wenger.
